Waterhead Race rescheduled to August 28

SWSC's flagship long distance race, the Waterhead, will take place on August 28 this year. The change from its usual mid-June date will enable most of the extensive works at SWSC's new location to be completed, so that the race can be opened to visiting sailors.

The Waterhead race - the only sailing race going the full length of Windermere and back - has been run annually since 1965. It was only cancelled once - in 2020 due to COVID restrictions.

The move of South Windermere Sailing Club to its new location at the YMCA North Camp has involved a huge amount of work from many club members, and all sailing activities are now taking place. However, Storm Arwen caused roof damage to the clubhouse and until the roof and internal water damage is able to be repaired, the men's changing room is out of action and work to finish the clubhouse refurbishment can not take place. Some temporary changing is available, but not enough to host a large open meeting, hence the Waterhead long distance race is now postponed until 28 August, when full changing facilities will be available.

For a history of the Waterhead, see the informative and entertaining posters prepared for SWSC's 60th anniversary.
