SWSC was delighted to host a round of the Lakeland and Border Laser Grand Prix on Saturday 4th August. There were 18 boats including 7 visitors. The briefing was at 10:30 and first race scheduled for 12:00. The sun shone for the whole event, those not wearing sun cream received sunburnt faces, winds were light and shifty resulting in a couple of impromptu capsizes.

For Race 1 a postponement and change of course just as the start sequence was just getting underway was necessary due to a large wind shift. As the race started the wind shifted back and forth leading to tricky sailing conditions for all, with the first boats finishing in just under the hour and the last boats within 10 minutes. The race honours going to Tom Burke beating Tim Keighley by 30 seconds with Stuart Bellfield a further 30 seconds behind.

Everyone then went in for lunch in the new Clubhouse overlooking the lake, a slight delay in starting Race 2 to allow everyone to eat lunch and get back to the sailing area.

For Race 2 competitors were again greeted by sun and light shifty winds, the race settled into what was becoming an obvious pattern here with the finishing order of Tim Keighley, then Stuart Bellfield followed by Gareth Beacock, with just 10 seconds separating the first two.

Race 3 got underway shortly after Race 2, and sun cream application, with a couple of retirements due to the time running on. Light and shifty winds again although the wind did fill in and settle towards the end of the race. The usual pattern was set up with the leading boats being as before. As with other races the course was shortened, however the leading pack failed to notice and carried on sailing the course (passing through the finish gate the wrong way, Rule 32.2) so completed an extra lap. This time line honours went to local sailor Owen O'Donnell, closely followed by boats that had been just behind, and some ahead who now returned to the line, unwound themselves and then finished.
